What is GHS?

The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) is an internationally agreed-upon regulation, created by the UN that requires manufacturers, importers, downstream users and distributors of chemical substances and mixtures to adopt its standard by June, 2015.

GHS “workplace” labeling for all lab operations

All products that fall within the scope of this regulation must carry the GHS label at the point where they are supplied in the hospital. Laboratories will be affected by this mandate whenever they use chemicals that require secondary containers such as bottles, flasks, cans and beakers. The objective of the label is to avoid the health and safety risks associated with unmarked chemicals that are handled by secondary users.

The GHS label template

The standardized, mandatory elements included in the GHS label are
1. Product identifier*
2. Signal word*
3. GHS pictograms*
4. Hazard statements*
5. Precautionary statements*
6. Supplier information*
7. Additional customer requirements

Digi-Trax has partnered with NiceLabel to bring you a complete GHS solution for all your laboratory operations. Our system minimizes space constraints, increases legibility and incorporates the International Language (Unicode) bar code.

To create a robust system

Besides designing all required label elements, you need to ensure users:

• will always print the right data.
• have controlled access to label design templates.
• can support different languages (Unicode) on the same label.
• can easily maintain the label templates long term
• can align information on labels and safety data sheets.
